Brian & Sue Kenny 1569 170th St. Schaller, Iowa firstname.lastname@example.org
Kenny Angus originated in 1990 in northwest Iowa near Schaller, by Brian and Sue Kenny and their sons, who are fourth and fifth generation beef producers. With the sincere love of beef cattle and an abundance of wasted crop residue readily available, we set out to build a herd of high quality functional cows. Since finding enough grass in our area to sustain a large cow herd would be difficult, we wanted a smaller herd of "front pasture quality cows". We selected Angus because of their unlimited potential and their ability to improve the quality of beef in the marketplace today.
It doesn't seem possible that over 25 years have passed since we purchased our first cows. Our goals haven't wavered from our original intentions. Breeding cattle that excel in the economically important traits that keep our customers and us in a profitable position. We want to add value to our customer's next calf crop. Breeding for performance, moderate birth weights, good maternal traits and a highly desirable carcass has been the mainstay of our program. When the majority of our customers sell their cattle by the pound, we must have breed leading performance, without sacrificing maternal capabilities. Through the extensive use of artificial insemination, embryo transfer and rigid culling standards we get closer to these goals with each calving season. Our cow herd is AI mated to proven superior sires to take as much of the guess work out as possible. We are continually striving for genetic superiority!
We calve in early winter to provide yearling bulls with the age and size needed by our customers to cover their cows. 80% of our herd calves in January to AI sires. Breeding stock is sold through our Angus bull and select female sale that we hold jointly with Morris Angus and Wiederstein Angus. Breeding Stock is sold through our Kenny Angus Bull & Select Female Sale that we have on the farm south of Schaller. It is held annually on the 2nd Friday in March. We also participate in the Iowa Angus Bull Test and Sale with 2 or 3 bulls, which is held the first Saturday in April in Lamoni.
Our lives stay busy with 3 active sons: Dustin (32) and wife Kate, Tyler (24) and Dru (22).Dustin and Kate have a daughter, Paisley Renea, who is almost 3 and just welcomed a baby boy, Kolt Wayne, into the family on November 28. We are thoroughly enjoying our 2 grandchildren. They live on an acreage outside Vermillion, SD and have a few cows as they have a passion for Angus like the rest of the family. Dustin is an Angus auctioneer traveling many miles covering a seven state area. Kate works in human resources at the University of South Dakota. Tyler graduated in 2015 from Simpson College in Indianola, IA, with a major in business management and a minor in marketing. He is home on the farm now getting a taste of raising Angus and full time crop production. Dru is a Senior at South Dakota State University in Brookings with a major in Ag Science and minors in Animal Science and Ag Business. He is also a 400m man on the track team and has been on the 4x400 relay that won and placed 3rd the last two years in the Summit League Conference. Dru has spent two summers during college in Montana on internships. One with Bob Sitz, at Sitz Angus in Montana and another with Ryan Ludvigson near Billings. Both were once in a lifetime learning experiences for Dru. The boys all seem to have been born with a love of Angus cattle like their mom. We don't have any full time off the farm jobs to keep us afloat, so the crops, cattle and family get the job done.
In Dustin’s early years, Col. Craig Conover, took Dustin under his wing and taught him a great deal about the auctioneering business. We are very grateful for everything Craig has done to help Dustin get a foothold in a very competitive arena. Dustin has been listening to Craig auctioneer since he was 9 while tagging along with me to Angus Sales, so he's a real natural on the block. If you need some new fire at your next sale, give Dustin a call.
